Field test, PARAFON Decibel Mute, office, Örebro

Citypassagen in Örebro is a state-of-the-art office building with space in its flexible offices for 1000 workplaces divided among seven floors. To allow today’s open, flexible office environments to provide pleasant surroundings to work in, there are high demands on both sound insulation and sound absorption. Paroc Akustik has supplied products from the PARAFON Decibel concept, which was developed specifically to provide an optimal sound environment in offices with flexible walls.

During construction, Akustikverkstan took indicative sound insulation measurements. The results of the measurements showed that solutions with PARAFON Decibel Mute and Decibel Barrier matched up well with expectations and with the requirements set, as well as the values measured in lab tests. You can see the results of the measurements in detail below on this page.

Roof Arkitekter took on the design of the future landmark in the centre of Örebro. The building, which is scheduled for completion by April 2019, has a high environmental profile with many smart solutions and has received preliminary certification under the Miljöbyggnad scheme – Silver level. The scheme includes requirements for the building’s energy consumption, indoor environment, sound environment and incorporated materials.

In the new, state-of-the-art Citypassagen building in Örebro, flexible office environments are being created with the help of system walls from Flex Interior System AB. A good sound environment helps to produce a more efficient and healthier working environment. Lindströms Undertak has therefore installed products from the PARAFON Decibel series, a range of ceiling products that are both noise-insulating and sound-absorbent.

The comprehensive solutions offered by PARAFON Decibel create effective noise attenuation, particularly in office environments such as those in Citypassagen, with the special acoustic challenges posed by structures with flexible system walls. In collaboration with Akustikverkstan and one of Sweden’s most prominent acousticians, Pontus Thorsson, we have developed, tested and adapted the concept for Nordic conditions. The result is a solution that complies with national building regulations, meets the highest standards for good sound environments and can easily be adapted to different needs in different environments. This has all been done to create the right sound in the right place.

To verify our estimated results, we have now carried out a control measurement. The measurement was performed in November 2018 by Pontus Thorsson, Akustikverkstan. The field tests show that our products, in combination with the walls in Citypassagen, meet all the requirements that have been set.

Control measurement 1:
Between two meeting rooms

Ceiling solution: PARAFON Decibel Mute + single PARAFON Decibel Barrier (Dn,f,w 52 dB)
PARAFON Decibel Mute installed on the inside of the room and in two rows (1200 mm) outside walls leading to corridors.

Technical construction height: 800 mm

Partition walls between rooms: "Flex Fineline R'w 44 dB" (Rw 46 dB) + OSB on one side – estimated to provide direct sound insulation of approx. Rw 48 dB.
Wall thickness 120 mm (without OSB) height 2800 mm

Sound insulation requirements: R'w 44 dB between rooms, two meeting rooms (requirement for corridors is R'w 35 dB, no control measurements were taken of this at the time).

Results of control measurement: measured R'w 43 dB.

Comment from Akustikverkstan: reason for falling short of  R'w 44 dB requirement is flanking transmission in the door section. Clear sound transmission in panels above doors was noted, which was not caused by leakage due to gaps/cracks. The door section used is intended for R'w 35 dB – with a door section intended for R'w 40 dB, the R'w 44 dB requirement would have been met (according to calculation, it would in that case have been  R'w 45 dB).

Measured value for total sound insulation for ceilings and walls matches up well with the table presented in Paroc’s PARAFON Decibel concept and the solution for total sound insulation R'w 44.

Control measurement 2:
Between rooms with glass walls on two sides and a passage directly outside

Ceiling solution: PARAFON Decibel Mute + single PARAFON Decibel Barrier (Dn,f,w 52 dB)

Technical construction height: 800 mm

Partition walls between rooms: Flex Glassline thickness 12.38 mm Height 2800 mm Rw (lab) 40 dB

Sound insulation requirements: R'w 39 dB (44 dB – 5dB "for partitions with larger glass sections that provide a good overview, the lower 5 dB value is acceptable” to the corridor)

Results of control measurement: Dn,T,w 41 dB close to the partition wall.

Comment from Akustikverkstan: Dn,T,w replaces R'w, when the total separating area cannot be clearly determined, when the sound can go in multiple directions, including in this case through the side walls. 

Control measurement 3:
Between rooms with glass walls on two sides and workplaces further away in the office landscape

Ceiling solution: PARAFON Decibel Mute + single PARAFON Decibel Barrier (Dn,f,w 52 dB)
PARAFON Decibel Mute installed on the inside of the room and in two rows (1200 mm) outside walls leading to corridors.
Outside the two rows of PARAFON Decibel Mute and out to the receiver positions, the sound-absorbing ceiling PARAFON Exclusive edge A, 18 mm was installed.

Measurement from small meeting room to workplaces in office landscape at a further distance

Ceiling solution: PARAFON Decibel Mute + single PARAFON Decibel Barrier (Dn,f,w 52 dB)
PARAFON Decibel Mute installed on the inside of the room and in two rows (1200 mm) outside walls leading to corridors.

Technical construction height: 800 mm

In this case, only two rows of PARAFON Decibel Mute have been installed outside the meeting rooms, and the rest of the ceiling (PARAFON Exclusive edge A, 18 mm) had not yet been installed; instead, the ceiling was open to the beams.

Sound insulation requirements: R'w 44 dB from meeting room to workplaces where people stay permanently, in this case in an office landscape.

Results of control measurement: DnTw  41 dB.  

Comment from Akustikverkstan: Requirement not met. This shows that a longer distance from the sound source to the receiver position does not lower the sound level sufficiently to achieve a lower sound insulation requirement. To meet the requirement, a highly absorbent ceiling is needed between the two rows of sound-insulating and sound-absorbing PARAFON Decibel Mute just outside the partition wall and out towards the receiver positions (as in control measurement 3).
